Retinol 101: How to Add Vitamin A to Your Night Routine

Retinol is one of the most studied ingredients in skincare. It belongs to the retinoid family – derivatives of vitamin A – and is loved for its ability to visibly smooth the look of fine lines and uneven texture.

Retinol and retinyl palmitate

Retinoids come in different strengths. Retinyl palmitate, used in our Anti-Ageing Retinol 0.2% Night Moisturiser, is a gentle form of vitamin A that the skin converts gradually into its active form. That makes it a comfortable starting point if you are new to retinoids or find stronger forms too much for your skin.

What retinoids can do

  • Help improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Leave skin texture looking smoother and more even
  • Reveal a fresher, brighter-looking complexion over time

How to use retinol

  1. Use it at night. Retinoids can make skin more sensitive to sunlight.
  2. Start slowly. Begin with two or three evenings a week and build up as your skin adjusts.
  3. Apply to clean, dry skin and keep it away from the delicate eye area unless the product is made for it.
  4. Wear SPF every day. A broad-spectrum sunscreen protects your results.
  5. Keep skin hydrated. Hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and squalane help keep skin comfortable.

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or using prescription skincare, speak to your doctor before using retinoid products.
